Well, I am kind of embarrassed to be writing this because the following information kind of displays our laziness/weakness as parents, but here goes...
At age 4 years & 5 months, Hannah Jean has FINALLY FINALLY FINALLY FINALLY given her Na-Nas (pacifiers) to the Na-Na Fairy (aka Tooth Fairy, names used interchangeably). We "tried" this separation twice in the past...once at Christmas last year and then once again when she turned 4, but both times we were too lazy/busy/stressed/tired/pregnant/and using misguided logic (oh-well-they're-only-baby-teeth) to follow through. So, finally, at 4 1/2, able to speak in paragraphs and write her name and get dressed, and argue with us...we decided Hannah was too old to be using her red, size 18 month, Na-Na...even at night. We told her about the Na-Na Fairy, who would come in the middle of the night and exchange her Na-Nas for whatever she wanted. So, we decided Friday would be the night. Earlier that day, after I had dropped her off at school, I drove past a garage sale and spotted the perfect gift for a Na-Na exchange...one of those spring-loaded horses that she could actually ride. I picked it up for $20 bucks and, with the help of Spencer, my 10 year old neighbor, hid it in his yard. Found out a little too late that, up until that point, he had still believed in the tooth fairy, OOOOOPS. He came over later that day, wide-eyed after a life-changing discussion with his mom, and informed me that he "knew the truth now...about everyone...even Santa". I'M THE WORST NEIGHBOR EVER!
Anyway...ruined childhood dreams aside...
Friday night, Hannah put her 2 Na-Nas under her pillow and went to sleep. A few hours later, Jon and I hauled the enormous horse into her room and retrieved one Na-Na from under her pillow. She had the other one in her mouth! Not wanting to risk waking her up, I decided this would be a 2 night process and the horse would provide encouragement for the next night. I had also purchased some cute little-girl make-up sets from Walgreens and some Sno-Caps, so I had a back up plan. The next morning she was ecstatic to find the horse in her room. She came running up the stairs shouting that we come down and see what the Na-Na Fairy had left her.
That night, she "wasn't ready to say goodbye to her last remaining Na-Na"...so I let her keep it until she was ready to give it away. The following night, she volunteered. The Na-Na was still under her pillow when I went to retrieve it a few hours after bedtime and I left the make-up sets and Sno-Caps in her bed. Again, she was ecstatic the next morning, and last night was the first full night where she went to sleep and stayed asleep without it.
I am not sad to see the Na-Nas go...they were getting really disgusting and were always getting lost. All in all, I think she will be OK and continue on with her life....although I'm not too sure about Spencer.
UPDATE: Jon informed me last night that Hannah had not infact volunteered to give away her last remaining Na-Na...but instead was coerced into it because Jon told her that the Na-Na Fairy was not happy that Hannah had tricked her the night before by keeping a Na-Na in her mouth and unless she gave up the other one that night, she would take away the horse with one wave of her magic wand. Poor Hannah!

Oh Katie... that is hysterical... that is totally something that I would do......
Great story! Loved the previous one also and all the pictures! You guys are great!
too cute!!
if anything, the NA-NA fairy can and will hang the na-na with a special magical sparkly string that can be placed UP HIGH on her wall (WHERE SHE CAN'T REACH) so that she can view it but not use it--
you're not lazy--it's easier with those then thumbs..
wonder how I'll do that--cut their two thumbs off?
Jack still sucks his occasionally when fast asleep--and he's in first grade. :)
How's school going??
I met someone that's an OR Nurse at our local hospital---she actually was in the room for my surgery last year (I recognized her face) she gave me some thoughts about school--but I trust you more.
xo na-na,
Tell your neighbor to stay away when I come over. :)
